Too Much Fluoride: The Risks

7/8/2017

Picture
Ever noticed annoying white stains, lines or grooves on your teeth? This could be fluorosis, an otherwise harmless condition caused by consuming too much fluoride. Fluorosis only occurs in childhood while permanent teeth are still developing but, once established, the marks are permanent. While fluoride can improve your smile with its many dental benefits, children can be at risk if they consume too much.
Key takeaways:
- Fluoride is added to drinking water, toothpaste and mouthwash.
- Your dentist can offer professional whitening to help mask the stains.
- Fluorosis stains can vary from white flecks or lines to brown spots or grooves.
"Although dental fluorosis isn’t harmful, it can still be treated if you’re self-conscious of your white marks."
