- Stem cells can be harvested from teeth (such as wisdom or baby teeth) and carefully preserved (e.g. cryopreservation) for future use
- Stem cells (cells that can become any kind of cell) could be used to repair tooth decay or even replace entire teeth
- For those patients who are fearful of the dentist and/or dental surgery, stem cells may provide an alternative treatment option
Teeth have already been 'grown' from stem cell experiments in laboratory animals. Future studies will investigate the use of stem cells growing new teeth in humans.
